Developing Personality Coherence and Integration:
An advanced psychotherapy seminar on Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy

Presenter: Dr. Joel Town

Seminar, October the 24th & 25th, 2019
Day of supervision, October the 26th, 2019 - Please note that seats are limited.

Dr. Joel Town is the Clinical Director and Consultant Psychologist at Dynamic Health Psychological Services and Assistant Professor at the Centre for Emotions & Health, Dalhousie University, Canada.

He has published widely on the efficacy of short-term psychodynamic therapies and therapeutic processes associated to change.
Dr. Town provides introductory and advanced level core training, supervision and workshops in ISTDP.

In his clinical practice, Dr. Town specializes in treating refractory populations, specifically posttraumatic stress disorder, somatic symptoms and depression.

Dr. Davanloo described the Spectrum of Patients with Fragile Character Structure who have limited capacity to tolerate anxiety and experience feelings. This type of personality organization is defined by a person who easily experiences threats to the integrity of self. As a consequence, two distinct characteristics of this population include: (a) they experience regular and acute spikes in intrapsychic anxiety or ‘perceived threats’ which manifest in cognitive perceptual disruption; (b) their repertoire of responding to the affect and anxiety evoked, on a developmental continuum,
is emotionally more immature.
Dr. Town will outline the modified version of ISTDP  technique for working with Fragile Character Structure. This involves psychic integration to develop a more coherent sense of self and others; alongside structural changes to tolerate the affects surrounding the co-existence of these parts; to allow the working through of complex attachment trauma.

This 2-day training course will focus on the technique of ISTDP for patients with difficulties in functioning associated to impaired personality organization. Detailed analysis of audio-visual case material will illustrate central principles therapists can use for tailoring the pace and content of treatment sessions to patient need.

Learning Objectives:
Learn key principles for restructuring affect, defence and anxiety
Learn to enhance your delivery of ISTDP for patients with Fragile Character Structure
